Demolition

Posted: under Reviews.

Introduction

Taking down old buildings and replacing them with new is a process that has been going on for thousands of years. The destruction of buildings might have occurred during battles or attacks on villages; or due to natural disturbances such as earthquakes or volcanic activity. The resultant ruins would need to be removed and rebuilt. So the idea of demolition would have come about where a population wished to re-inhabit a specific area or site. (One famous example is the Holy Temple in Jerusalem which was deliberately destroyed by the Assyrians around 586 BCE. After 50 years of occupation the Jews returned to Jerusalem and began the re-construction of the second temple which took seventy years to complete.)

However the actual word to demolish only came into being in 1570, and was used from then on to mean the deliberate taking down or destroying of a building or structure.

Preserving the past – preparing the future.

In a country like Britain with very dense populations per square mile, there is a limited amount of land available for development. The land between built up areas of the villages and towns is known as Green Belt and is protected from development to preserve the agricultural and natural heritage which is vital to the economy of the country.

The outcome of this policy is that there is a constant shortage of land for housing and industry, so the developers have to be more creative when providing structures for the population. One of the ways of doing this is to find places where the buildings are no longer commercially viable or have been abandoned, and re-use the area for different purposes. These areas are known as brownfield, or greyfield sites. In some cities, particularly Leeds and Manchester, the old warehouses or factories have been converted into apartments, retaining the original shell and reconfiguring the internal dimensions into valuable living accommodation.

Brownfield sites are disused industrial and commercial facilities where the land may be contaminated with hazardous waste or pollution. They are potentially valuable for significant redevelopment once they have been cleaned up. Greyfield sites are urban properties that have been underutilised or abandoned, but do not have the environmental issues of brownfield sites. They were termed greyfield sites because of large areas of asphalt that covered the land. These sites are valuable because they already have the infrastructure such as water, sewage, electricity and gas in place and do not need remedial work to exploit the site.

When a structure is to be removed there are different ways of approaching the task. The size and construction of the building, the new use of the site and whether there are valuable elements suitable for re-use, will all determine how it is to be demolished.

Traditional Demolition

Traditionally, once all the services were disconnected, the machinery and men would go in and just knock down the walls which caused the roof to collapse and then drag all the debris away. Any concrete hard standing would be broken up ready for removal. The site would be cleared of rubbish and disposed of in landfill sites. However modern demolition practices are very controlled and are subject to strict planning, safety and monitoring regulations.

Small structures such as two or three storey houses can be dismantled quite easily with hydraulic excavators and bulldozers using an undermining process. The walls are undermined at the base, in order to topple the structure; at the same time the manner and direction of the fall is controlled. Clean-up and safety issues are also taken into account when determining how the building will be undermined and demolished.

Larger buildings such as tower blocks and chimneys require more specialist techniques, and are outlined below.

Deconstruction

A new approach to demolishing buildings is deconstruction – a green approach. The aim is to minimise the amount of waste going to landfill sites by carefully preserving valuable materials for reuse. The work may be a painstaking task of dismantling by hand – brick by brick – or beam by beam. The reclaimed materials are then recycled or re-used for future buildings. The results of deconstruction can save in excess of 90% waste from going to a landfill site. When the farmer opposite to my house sold his farm yard with barns for housing, the builder demolished the barns, cleaned up the bricks and reused them for the perimeter wall of the farmhouse. At the time I was looking for some rubble as a base for a path and the builder let me take several barrow loads off his pile.

Recycling

Historically when old buildings were ruined from disuse or war damage the local people would gradually remove the stone and use it to build their new structures such as houses or barns. Hadrian’s wall between Carlisle and Newcastle has mostly gone because after the Romans left, the local population made off with the beautifully dressed stone the Roman craftsmen had used in the building of the wall. So even in those days people understood the value of recycling because it was much cheaper than having to quarry and dress the stone themselves.

At one time the rubble resulting from a demolished building would be taken to a landfill site for disposal. Now however concrete can be rapidly broken up with the latest machine called a guillotine and the resultant rubble can be crushed and used as sub-base material for the foundation of the new building which is to replace the old, or sent to other construction sites. These days this crushed rubble is called 6f2 crushed stone or 6f2 crushed material.

Modern machinery and techniques allows the demolition companies to efficiently segregate waste types on or off-site. Wherever possible construction materials are recycled and re-used in the new structure. Recycling of waste contributes to a considerable savings in project costs and is good for the environment.

When we renovated our bungalow 20 years ago the builder, who was a bell ringer, found an old beam from a bell tower that was being renovated, and after carefully treating it, installed it in the kitchen. It gave the room some badly needed character and has never needed any further treatment.

Copper pipes, wiring, roof tiles or slates, floor tiles and doors, and wood panelling are some of the valuable artifacts that are saved for recycling and re-use. There are specialist yards in many towns where reclaimed old or antique artefacts are available for purchase.

Tall Buildings

The demolition of tall buildings requires specialist techniques. In some cases a wrecking ball on a crane may be used to demolish the top part of a tall building until it is down to a manageable height. However this process is rarely used due to the uncontrollable factor of the swinging ball and the proximity of other buildings.

Other methods of demolition of tall buildings are by implosion using explosives, controlled collapse and piecemeal. Also ‘High Reach’ demolition excavators are used where explosives are not suitable. Once the building is down to a more manageable height demolition continues in the usual way.

The steeplejack Fred Dibnah became famous in the late 1970’s for his work on demolishing tall chimneys without the need for explosives. He would cut an ingress at the base of the chimney, use wooden props to support the brickwork and then burn the props so that the chimney toppled hopefully in the right direction.

The tallest building to be lawfully demolished was the Singer Building of New York in 1967/8. More recently the collapse of the World Trade Centre after the 9/11 attack in 2001 demonstrates the terrible devastation that could occur if the demolition is not controlled and very carefully contained.

In the demolishing of tall buildings and large structures water hoses and spray equipment is used to control the dust and would is termed a wet demolition.

Explosions

What comes to mind for many people when they think about demolition would be the dramatic collapse of a tall building using explosives. However it is usually the process of implosion, using explosives, that brings down a tall building so that it does as little damage as possible to the surrounding environment. Implosion is essential for dense urban areas and is very fast, the collapse taking only seconds, with the building crashing inwards into its own footprint.

Using explosives is specialist work and is a very skilled process and getting it wrong can be disastrous. If an implosion is not prepared correctly the danger may be damage to neighbouring structures or even killing onlookers from flying debris. Even more dangerous is a partial collapse of a building where the remaining structure is unstable and there are still primed explosives that failed to go off. Workers are in great danger if or when continuing the demolition.

Other dangers of working with explosives occurs when the atmospheric pressure from low cloud above the implosion site will cause the shockwave to spread outwards instead of upwards. The wave of energy and sound created will break windows and cause other damage to the surrounding buildings.

Because of the dangers of working with explosives, implosion will only be used when other methods are too costly or impractical.

Health and Safety

Demolition of any building is highly dangerous and is a much more complicated and technical process than most people would realise. Experienced and skilled operators are essential to ensure safety for both workers and public alike. The stability of any structure is reliant on the interdependence of its component parts, so an incorrect sequence of dismantling could result in a premature collapse.

Health and safety is paramount in demolition work so personnel working in the industry have to be thoroughly trained. It is advisable for operatives to have gained a Certificate of Competence in Demolition to ensure they have the necessary skills and safety awareness. All demolition work is regulated by the Construction, Design and Management Regulations.

Sequence of Demolition

There has to be a sequence of actions before any demolition can take place. Each area council will have their own specific list for planning approval, but a typical order would be as follows:-

  • Provision of Information
The demolition company must provide information about the construction to be demolished, its previous use and the appropriate demolition method to be applied including disposal of hazardous substances.
  • Survey of Demolition
Identification of any structural problems as well as risks associated with hazardous or flammable substances will require a thorough survey of the site. (E.g. Where petrol has been stored, ie disused garage, precautions need to be taken to prevent a fire hazard).
  • Preferred and Safe Method of Work
A reputable company involved in demolition will be able to select the appropriate method of disposal. Planning and outlining the dismantling process is necessary for assiduous monitoring. A detailed statement outlining the safety process needs to be agreed by all parties involved before any demolition can take place.
  • Preparation and Planning
There is a lot of preparation to be done before starting work on demolishing the building itself. Issues such as asbestos abatement, disconnecting utilities, rodent baiting, dealing with hazardous substances and making safe any electric, gas or other services have to be resolved.
  • Protection of the Public
Where demolition is carried out in heavily populated areas the protection of the public is paramount. Safety cannot be compromised. Temporary services may need to be arranged, health hazards assessed and people disturbed will need to be informed.

Conclusion

The word ‘demolish’ is interpreted as the deliberate and controlled collapse of a structure. Demolition work is a very hazardous business and demolishing any building is a complex and skilled process. The aim in demolition is to remove an unwanted building as safely and quickly as possible, recycle or re-use most of the old material, and clear the site ready for the subsequent use.

In the centre of Nottingham over the last few years there has been a major reconstruction of what was an old car park into a brand new shopping complex. While this was going on the public were only really aware of the boarding around the area, a change in traffic direction and maybe some big lorries going in and out of the site.

So the next time you see buildings being demolished to make way for the new, give a thought to the company involved who’s team are daily working in a dangerous environment, adhering to all of the regulations and carefully and meticulously carrying out the project to bring us the modern conveniences we have come to expect and clearing the way for the future.

Niche Marketing Secrets Revealed

Posted: under Reviews.

Something happened to me the other day that really made me wonder why some people find it so hard to achieve any type of success online.

Many people state that all programs are scams or simply don’t offer the right ype of support for your affiliate marketing efforts.

Promoting a home business opportunity is for newbies, plain and simple, unless of course the home business opprtunity is such a high-end program that it makes it difficult to make sales, then it becomes a matter of making those sales while everyone else is struggling to make their first sale.

The reason why niche marketing is so successful as a business model for many people is because it allows you to promote yourself and your sites first.

So, imagine if you had a hobby or passion that you truly enjoyed writing about. The most important part of that preceding sentences is the word “enjoyed”… If you enjoy talking about your passion or hooby, then your site content will be of great quality and honestly, good content is the best form of SEO you could hope to achieve, just by writing well.

Obviously some other factors will come into play for you besides just writing well. You need to write well and optimize your content in such a way as to allow the search engines to find your content. This really isn’t hard to do.

If you need any type of Online Marketing and Internet Business Advice simply do a search for what it is you need to learn to get your sites noticed by Google and other search engines.

There are plenty of blogs and bloggers out ther who are willing to share this type of information with you for free, and plenty of articles from article directories that are doing the same thing.

If you target your niche, sub-niche, keywords, or sub-keywords specifically enough, then you do have a chance of out-ranking other authority sites in the search engines for your chosen terms.

Here’s a tip:

If your main SEO competition has a PageRank 8 site that gets 10,000 visitors a month from all sorts of search terms, you can easily compete with them by getting domain names that specifically target each sub-keyword or phrase.

So, let’s take the avid and enthusiastic passion hobby niche of bird-watching for a case in point. The same crew of sites are ranking well for terms like bird binoculars, birding guides, bird feeders and so on…

I did some reasearch into this niche and realized that the domain names and sites I was up against were going to be tough competition.

So, I devoted one site to bird binoculars, and another to birding guides, and once those have reached the top of the rankings, I will proceed to build another site, and add enough content and baclinks to it to get top ranked for other keywords that I thought it would be impossible to rank well for.

The Niche marketing secret I am revealing to you right now is that no SEO competition is too great for you to tackle and to have your sites perform well against.

All you need to do well with your rankings strategy is to be willing to target specific keywords and make sure your domain names have those keywords in there. At some point when your niche sites are doing well on their own, they’ll also link to each other naturally and you will begin to crowd the first page of the search engines with your site content.

If I decided that I wanted more than just one spot on Page 1 for a certain search term, I could do that easily enough if the right domain names were available. I’ve done it enough times to know that it can be done with the right kind of minimal effort.

So far, the best strategy that I’ve come up with when deciding to target certain keywords is to target product names and if domain names aren’t available for the product name, then I look for the product name + review for a domain name.

If the .com tld is taken for my desired domain name, I will get the .org TLD name, and if that’s taken, then I move on to another keyword that might do well for getting organic natural traffic.

Once I find a good enough domain name, I will set up a wordpress blog on it, and immediately configure it to have the proper ping list. Then I will find an article that I can republish on my blog, and finding one usually takes about 15 seconds. After finding an article I can use for quick content I will publish it on the blog once it’s ready to go, configuration wise.

Then I submit the RSS feed to the blog to a couple of RSS diretories, and even submit the sitemap for the site to Google Webmaster Tools if I am not being too lazy. I don’t think that sitemap submission is overly important any more, but one thing I do know, it’s that submitting your site to the search engines is kind of a waste of time.

It’s best to let Google and other search engines find you on their own since that’s a more natural way of getting noticed, and once one search engine finds you, the rest will follow eventually.

After submitting the RSS feed, I then will create a squidoo or hub page and add some unique content there. I will also add the RSS feed url for my blog to the hubpages so every new post on the blog also updates on my hubpages, which basically adds fresh new content to the hub page and makes it perform better, rankings-wise.

Then, I will write an article to be submitted to my article directory of choice, EzineArticles. The article I submit will have 2 backlinks in it to my main site/blog and to my hub page or Squidoo Lens. Once the article is approved and live on the internet, I will post this to my blog (2d piece of duplicate content).

Since it takes a few days to have an article reviewed, accepted, and published, you can take that time to gather up some more of your keywords that you want to target in future content pieces you write for your site.

Use Dropshipping To Improve Business

Posted: under Reviews.

All of the hundreds and thousands of small work from home businesses that are out there are always looking for ways to increase their sales and hence their revenues and one of the best ways found to do this is to operate a dropship home based businesses model. In many cases the small work from home business operates with a customer base that is within a relatively small radius of their focus of operation. What wholesale dropshipping does is to open up the market place in terms of seeing the whole world as a customer. Doing this really can help any business operation make great expansion.

The idea of wholesale dropshipping has been around for many many years of course but it is only recent years that we have seen people in the smaller businesses using this facility to really drive their business forwards. Part of the reason for this is down to the role and use of technology on a widespread basis, it means that people can information on wholesale tin containers, drophsip magazines and everything else that they may need in order to launch their business forward on an international basis.

The problem that many used to face was that of finding the best drop ship companies to use but now with the use of the internet, we can see that this issue is really something of the past in most cases, reason being is that most dropshipping companies are using the internet as a means of getting their message out there to the world.

How to Make a Profit in Concert Promotion

Posted: under Reviews.

Most theaters, arts centers, and arenas etc , will hire out their venue for special events. You, the up and coming Events Manager could easily arrange for a POPULAR or NICHE act to appear some months ahead. There may be an act or popular group that have strong links with your community, that way you will have a head start in your concert promotion efforts and you will be familiar with your marketplace.

To recoup the cost of hiring the venue and paying the staff and the artist, you will of course have a given amount of seats and you will price the seats accordingly. Your obvious goal is to make a a lot of money and you must not fail. Presuming you’ve done some research and you have secured the services of a great act you can get down to the business of promotion. But first we find some seat booking software.

Well I dont know exactly what cut booking agents take when they sell your tickets but if you have a month or two in advance you can easily manage all this your self with some theatre plan software for your website. That way you can plug the website into your network and with some clever marketing you can watch your venue gradually fill up and even automate the process online.

For instance you will invite your network to reserve their seats themselves, they can actually choose where they want to sit and whats more you will capture their email, address and telephone numbers into your online reservation system for future marketing opportunities. You dont have to take immediate payment using an expensive online payment system, but you will be able to contact them by email and phone to arrange payment in other ways.

Another way to save money will be to allow your customers to pick up and print out their tickets from their online account they created when they reserved their seats. The tickets can be PDF format with a unique reference id and 128 Barcoded. You would only need a handheld barcode scanner and a laptop at the door of the venue to check ticket authenticity.

You have time to use word of mouth, community newspaper, local and national advertising to guarantee a sold out performance and you can monitor everything from the comfort of your own home.

Now if you are successful with your theater plan software and the show is a fine success?….what a great achievement and most probably a handsome profit if you got your sums right. Now you have a a huge database to work with onselling other products and services and ready for your next special event. Well done.

please pause – I need to make changes — thank you

There continues to be more questions being asked about the Home Staging business as a career choice. There are even two new television shows that are dedicated to Home Staging but let’s take a hard look and see if all of this excitement is justified and if this really is something that a wise person might want to pursue as a career and also the different Home Staging courses that are available.

Home Staging is basically nothing more than the business of making a house look better and getting it ready to be shown for sale. It’s really getting your car washed and cleaned before putting it out in front of your house with a “For Sale” sign. It’s pretty obvious that things that look better also sell better weather it be a car, a piece of furniture or a house. These are the types of things that will be covered in Home Staging Classes.

The information obtained through the National Association of Realtors very much confirms this statement as their studies show that professionally staged houses sell on average 5 times faster than unstaged homes and that over 90% of staged homes sell in less than one month.

This means that as the real estate market continues to get even softer: primarily because of the flood of foreclosed properties that the demand for Home Staging services continues to grow as a way to facilitate these property sales in a reasonable time.

As could be expected, the growth of the Home Staging market has also led to a mushrooming of Home Staging Training courses. A person needs to use some judgment before signing up with one of these training courses as many of them seem to be very over-priced.

Do Yeast Infections Occur in Men?

Posted: under Reviews.

When we think of yeast infection we always seem to think of women, not yeast infections men. But many men do suffer from yeast infection, sometimes multiple infections throughout their lives. Yeast infections occur in men for the same reasons they do in women. In many cases it can occur from having unprotected intercourse with a woman who also has the condition.

Do Women Get Yeast Infections from Men?

A 2003 study finds that the presence of yeast in men does not make women more prone to recurrent yeast infections. But certain sex acts might. If either one of the partners in a sexual relationship have this fungus growing on their body, then there is a good chance that the fungus will be passed from partner to partner. This problem may continue and continue unless both partners and all infected partners involved have the yeast infection problem destroyed.

What Are The Symptoms of Yeast Infections Men?

Because there is a low level of awareness among men, and because the infection can be present without any clear symptoms, many men are totally unaware that they have it, and could be passing it to their sexual partners. So yeast infection in men is a very serious issue, not to be taken lightly. So how do you know if you have a yeast infection? If you have any of the following symptoms, then it is very likely you have the condition: irritation, itching, small discharges, foreskin sores, discomfort during sex, and a white cheese-like matter. It can also cause itching and dryness on your skin.

How Do You Treat Yeast Infections Men?

Knowledge and understanding of the causes, symptoms and cures of this ailment will surely be useful in treating it, and better yet, in preventing it altogether. Men must come to terms with the reality that yeast infection is as much a man’s problem as it is a woman’s problem.

There are various over-the-counter medications which may help, such as clotrimazale (gyno-lotrimin), oral diflucan and montistat. More natural remedies have proven to be very popular, such as yogurt, garlic, aloe vera, oregano oil, and tea tree oil. Although with men the cream based medications tend to wipe off in their underwear. The creams can still work, it is just a little trickier to keep it on the skin.

Some Useful Top Lists I Just Created

Posted: under Reviews.

I just created a few lenses on squidoo, one ranking my top 10 scariest movies ever and the other with some short reviews on the top GPS systems. I recently went on a road trip and honestly probably would never have made it back had it not been for my trusty Garmin! :)

Anyway here are the links to the lists…

Top 10 Scariest Movies Ever – Everybody loves a good scary movie. The next time you are in the mood for a freight, just check out my list and take your pick. I watch a lot of movies and even though there have been some great new additions to the horror genre recently (the Saw series among others), you’ll notice that my list is dominated with all the classics. I tried hard to fit in some of the more modern efforts but I couldn’t not include any of those in my top 10. The Silence Of The Lambs is the youngest of the lot and it was released 17 years ago. So come on horror directors/writers, get the finger out! :)

Now here is my second lens about GPS systems that will help you to find driving directions quickest. In my opinion in the not too distant future not carrying a quality GPS system will become as rare as not carrying a time piece. More than likely peoples watches will include GPS systems built in.

And if none of this interests you, why not entertain your family and friends and learn card tricks…

Powershot A590 Reviewed

Posted: under Reviews.

Canon are a one of the big guns in the photographic world and have been for a very long time. They’re well known for their point and shoot digital cameras and perhaps the most successful has been the Powershot range. Motion detection technology is now incorporated in the A590IS model, to set the best overall settings for any movement of the subject.

All small cameras suffer from redeye to some extent Red eye occurs because the flash is too close to the lens axis on small cameras. Red-eye is removed from flash photos wiith the Canon face detection technology. That happens before the images are written to the memory card. A fantastic feature to anyone who takes a lot of flash pictures of friends and family.

The face selection feature also includes ’select and track’ which lets you pick one face from a crowd and concentrate on that face, even if the person moves around. For anyone with young children that’s an absolute boon! Exposure and flash are set to keep faces looking natural and with the optical image stablization system camera shake could become a thing of the past. You’re not limited to just a couple of focus modes though. There are plenty of choices for every shooting situation.

There are 3 settings for the image stabilization, which offers great image quality. Even if you try to take a blurry shot, you probably can’t! That’s how good it is. Remember that there is a 4x zoom so the image stablisation system is great for helping you make the most of that zoom range. You’ll find all your handheld and long shots will be sharper and clearer because of the IS part of the A590IS.

Unlike the expensive and extremely highly specified Powershot G10, the A590IS is a powershot for the whole family.

Featuring 8 megapixels and a 2.5 inch LCD screen, the Canon A590IS is easy to use even for beginners, especially when it comes to printing. The A590IS features a dedicated Print/Share button for direct printing and downloading. It’s literally pushbutton simple, so even your children can do it. The Canon Powershot A590IS represents a fantastic blend of form and function at a sensible price.

Caribbean Nostalgia

Posted: under Reviews.

I´ve recently moved to Riviera Maya, more exactly to some villas in akumal. It´s been a year now and I haven´t seen my family or friends, somehow this holiday season is making me vulnerable.

It seems my potentially politic family is having all the attention since airplane tickets to meet my family for Holidays were enormously expensive and completely out of reach.

We often meet my boyfriend´s family in our villas in Akumal, sometimes we invite them to stay over for the week of even the holidays but this time we are meeting them in Merida. Merida is a Yucatecan city 3 hour drive distance from my Akumal condo. We are spending this special party at Uncle Mau´s place and the night at Granpa´s hacienda. We are taking Mr. Cache our best companion; grumpy and old boxer with us, he´s never left behind!

And the great part is that I´ve just received a call from a good old friend, actually of one of my best friends; saying that she´s coming to tulum for a week with her boyfriend and her lovely Uma to salute Mr. Cache over some margaritas at the beach.

So on the 25th I´m leaving Merida for Tulum, a cute town 20 minute drive from Akumal. Probably we´ll be spending New Year´s Eve with them at our villas in Akumal, which sounds perfect for me and for them as well! My first guests in a year!!! I’ll be taking them snorkeling at Yalku, beer bucketing at la Buena vida, deep sea diving with uncle chalo’s dive shop and probably I’ll be taking them to the cenote route by bicycle; which is a 6 hour sunny and exhausting tour.

English Saddle for your Horse

Posted: under Reviews.

English Saddle is very best choice for Horse Riding. This a good, solid saddle for flatting my horse and it is great for equitation. It fit my horse very well, and he is a large barreled thoroughbred with high withers. Its very comfortable for me and my horse. The seat is extremely comfortable for me and I feel very good.

English saddles aren’t reserved to England. Their universal use is a reflection on their viability through the decades. English saddles are for English riding. They don’t have deep seats or high cantles and pommels. Their goal is to provide the horse with optimal fluidity of motion for a variety of functional tasks. They’re used exclusively in the Olympic games in the equestrian competitions too. English riding is relegated forward seat riding, dressage, show hunting, eventing, saddle seats, and English pleasure. Dressage, however, does not mean the horse’s apparel. It’s simply a contest to see how well the horse obeys commands in a quiet and calm manner. If the saddle is not hard-pressed or bound tightly, they will have more fluidity of motion and ability to disobey slightly. Taking away the restrictive saddle forces the animal to obey the owner’s other techniques and commands instead of brute force. The horse’s manners are showcased in English pleasure, and eventing is just a combination of dressage, cross-country jumping, and show jumping. Without English saddles, there would be no English riding.

An English saddle is different from an Australian stock, Asian and Western saddle. The unique purpose of the English saddle is to provide quick movement over harsh terrain and other difficult-to-pass places. They’re also used in competition because the horse has freer movement and capacities. The all-purpose saddle finds most of its roots in the English saddle. These eventing saddles are used for flat riding and jumping. A skilled rider should try his hand at an English saddle because there are more options. Your standard Western saddle just doesn’t add up to the benefits.

English saddles can be made with leather or synthetic components and may be built around a wooden or fiberglass tree. A new trend in English saddles is a ‘treeless’ design which many feel is more flexible and comfortable for horse and rider.

Equestrian saddles are designed for particular tasks and it is a form of evolution that has determined how todays saddles look. English saddles are generally fairly plain in design with a flatter seat and no pommel which is the raised horn at the front of a western saddle. The work of western cowboys vary markedly from the english hunter!

Fox hunting and the need for a light saddle which allowed for a great deal of flexibility was probably the major infuence on english saddle design. English saddles are used in all olympic equestrian events. Varieties of englsh saddles include dressage, jumping and racing saddles.

The first step in saddle manufacture is treating the leather. This involves soaking the hide in a lime solution to loosen the outer layer of skin and the hair, and then removing the hair.

Is the saddle resting flat on your horse’s back? The panel (the underside) and the seat should be level with the ground. In addition the pommel should never be higher than the cantle, whereas the cantle in most cases will be noticeably higher than the pommel. The cantle height will vary depending on the type of English saddle you are using. In addition the saddle length should not reach back onto the horse’s loins.

The importance of selecting an English saddle that is properly fitted to you and your horse cannot be underestimated. An improper fit can cause your otherwise perfect show horse to exhibit poor extension, buck or resist your cues due to the discomfort and confiscation to his movement the saddle causes.

Is Scotland in North Carolina?

Posted: under Reviews.

Would it surprise you to discover that there are more people living in the state of North Carolina of Scottish Descent than Scots in Scotland.

After the highland clearances where the major landowners evicted several thousand crofters (small-holders) large number of Scots made their way by boat to the new American settlements. One party of nearly 2,000 Scots from the Isle of Jura and surrounding area settled in North Carolina. You could read more about that on the Laird of Jura website.

However what I did not know until fairly recently when I was reading about the town of Laurinburg in North Carolina which is as Scottish as the country of Scotland if not more so. For example:

The town of Laurinberg is situated in the state county of “Scotland”.

Laurinberg’s High School is actually called “Scotland High School”. And what better school song could they have than “Scotland the Brave” the national anthem of Scotland itself.

Apart from their traditional marching band who wear the Royal Stewart Tartan as a uniform they also have a prize winning Scottish bagpipe team.

They use the same name “Fighting Scots” for their Basketball, Baseball and Football teams.

As you may know St Andrew is the Patron Saint of Scotland and the name of their Presbyterian College is of course St Andrews. Just inside the grounds of the college you will be confronted by a huge bronze statute of a Highland Warrior proudly holding a Claymore (a huge 2 handed sword favoured by Braveheart).

The College is also home to the Scottish Heritage Centre.

Feeling hungry? Visit the local fast food company called Scottish Foods using a Scottish bagpiper as its main logo.

The area even has a soccer team called the Scottish Claymores.

We cannot ignore the fact that many local street names are named after places in Scotland including Skye, Argyllshire, Oban, Kintyre.

Do you know any other place which is more Scottish than this town in North Carolina?

Looking for a unique gift idea for someone with a Scottish connection then make them a Scottish landowner.

Looking for Horses for Sale

Posted: under Reviews.

As I watch my friends look for horses for sale horses for sale, the same theme keeps repeating itself over and over—suitability. We’ve all seen it; the wrong horse for the job. I see people buying horses that are not suitable because of conformation, age, previous work, movement or incompatibility with the rider, among other reasons. Most common seems to be the young horse buy—the four-year-old horse for the child or someone who just intends to ride on the trails.

Sure, you can find a nice quiet four-year-old, but, really, what are the chances he’ll be a trustworthy mount for a weak inexperienced amateur or the older recreational trail rider? Another wrong horse scenario involves conformation. One friend was looking at horse sales that were billed as “dressage or hunter” prospects. (Frankly, I don’t see how a horse could be both except if you intend to ride just the lower levels of dressage, but that’s just my feeling.) She was shopping for a dressage horse and came back with a trial horse who seemed pleasant enough in personality, but he was a big draft cross type, maybe Irish draught.

“I dunno…,” I mussed, taking in his big, draft body, huge legs, and clunky feet. When he cantered, he sounded like a medieval war horse. “I’m no expert, but he looks more like he’d be real happy as a field hunter.” “Really? They said he’d probably go to fourth level, maybe higher,” she said. “I thought you said you wanted something small enough so that you could mount it from the ground in case you got thrown?” I wondered aloud, figuring he was over 17 hands. She didn’t answer. She was shorter than me, and I knew I’d have to vault off the side of the arena to get on this monster. And it’s not like she sticks like glue either; she was off her previous horse more often than not. Needless to say, her instructor did not feel he’d make an upper level dressage horse, and he went back before his trial week was up.

Maybe I’m not one to comment. I’ve never sold my horses. I’ve loved them for what they could do. I don’t really know what it’s like to go horse shopping with the intent on finding a horse for a particular job. In a recent lesson with my dressage trainer, we began to push Lady’s training a little further, encouraging her to carry herself in a more advanced frame. Because we’re going slowly and carefully, she’s picking up the work quickly and agreeably (that is, when she isn’t distressed by squealing pigs.) I am well aware that she is not built to move through the upper levels of dressage, but that’s okay. She doesn’t like jumping and she’s not terribly bold without a lot of encouragement. But she’s a nicely forward, pretty mover for an ex-racehorse, with a lovely head and neck. I’m happy to work with what she’s willing to give while keeping her sound and sane.

My riding aspirations revolve around what my horse is capable of doing—her suitability for the task. I will find the right job for her so that she can be the right horse. Just make sure if you are looking at a horse sale, that you look for the right reasons and the right horse. With that said, I hope you find what you are looking for and happy trails!

Boat Insurance and Why You Need It

Posted: under Reviews.

When you are out on the water, you want to be just as covered with insurance as you are when you are in your car. Power boat insurance is a great thing to have for those moments when the unexpected happens. Here are some reasons why you need boat insurance while you have fun out on the water with your family and friends.

Accidents Happen On the Water

Being active on the water does not at all mean that it is accident free just because there are fewer vehicles. There are a lot of opportunities for accidents of some kind to take place with injuries to people and damage to boats, docks, or other watercraft.

While insurance for boats cannot prevent an accident, it can help you have the money you need to meet both medical and property expenses. When you think about the many possibilities of accidents – here are a few that could happen on the water: capsizing, collide with another boat, sinking, fire, storms, and more.

Boat insurance pays for liability and medical claims that occur from your use, maintenance and ownership of the boat. People who are injured will also be paid for medical injuries up to the amount of the coverage purchased.

Accidents Occur on Land, Too

Besides what could happen on the water, insurance for boats will also cover you for accidents on land. This could include theft, damage while towing, collision with another car, etc. For the most part, accidents are both unexpected and unforeseen. This means that when they occur, it often could not have been prevented until too late.

Theft Can Take Your Boat Away

Another real good reason to have boat insurance is because thieves take boats, too. Having marine insurance will mean that you do not get left having to pay the bank for a boat you no longer have. Property liability covers not only the boat itself, but also boat equipment.

Boating Accidents Occur Unexpectedly

As with a car, accidents can happen most any time. People can be injured, even lives lost due to an accident on the water. Your boat insurance company can cover you and even pay claims against you in lawsuits. You also can get uninsured boater’s insurance which acts the same as uninsured driver’s insurance on land. This will help protect you in the event of an accident caused by an uninsured boater.

Boat insurance also offers you a number of options. Some options are more valuable than others, depending on your needs. Here are a few of them: repairs to your boat to prevent further damage, repairs needed in an emergency (engine breaks down, etc.), recovery costs, and more.

Boats of any size and type are insurable – you just need to get it before you go out on the water. Older boats or yachts may need to be inspected before they can be insured.

When you start looking for yacht insurance, watercraft insurance or standard boat insurance, be sure to get several boat insurance quotes before you buy. This will enable you to compare prices and get a good deal – and great coverage, too.

If you need boat insurance for your boat, you can get insurance quotes today by contacting 1 800 Insurance. Toll free, 1-800-insurance ( 1.800.467.8726 ) or visit www.1800insurance.com

Making Investments in Real Estate in Depressed Counties

Posted: under Reviews.

Where the market is flat you will have to be aware up front that obtaining a property for wholesale real estate investing will require some smarts. You won’t want to be forced to restrict yourself to acquiring a investment that you can live in. For Example, that means you buy a investment and dwell in it until you sell it. In such an area you will have to get an edge on the competition. You will not be able to turn it any higher than what the location can handle. In this situation, you need to tie it up at a big discount to make a good profit if you are doing this the traditional way.

In this instance wholesalers will start by studying prices in the local areas. Given the local real estate locations and the amount of motivated sellers, people who are flipping real estate are doing very good. Regardless of what you choose to do, when all is said and done, you have to decide whether the money you made against the level of labor that came into play getting the home successfully sold. Thus smoother low risk techniques like real estate wholesaling are preferred.

Of course be sure to educate yourself about wholesaling homes and/or discuss with a knowledgeable expert before you plan any new investment company and personal finance endeavors.

How to best use your autoresponder for your email marketing campaigns.

Posted: under Reviews.

Studies show a potential visitor will take seven to nine messages before s/he becomes comfortable with you and eventually contacts or preferably buys your products or services. If you are left with only one marketing tool, what would you retain? Most marketers would say autoresponders or their email list. This tells you how serious you should treat your email marketing effort AND your autoresponder tool.

What is an autoresponder? An email autoresponder allows you to follow up your potential customers at a predefined timeframe automatically through emails. You may acquire this functionality by installing a script on your webhosting or you can acquire this function through third party autoresponder service providers Is your email autoresponder working as effectively as designed? What criteria should you consider when it comes to picking an email autoResponder? What is the single most important criteria when choosing your autoresponder service?

Three criteria you should consider before you invest your hard-earned cash in this vital marketing tool. A great deliverability is the most sought-after feature of any email autoresponder. Any internet user would receive tons of SPAM mails in their mail-box each day. If you use Gmail, you should be familiar with the screen shot below. There are 2808 spam emails in my Gmail account as at the time of writing. I will never read these emails. If you use some poor autoresponder service, your emails will automatically be streamed into these SPAM folders. You may ask, “What determines which email go to “SPAM” folder?” Unless you are gmail.com, you don’t know their “way of thinking”.

But definitedly you don’t want to be the one who emails the optins to their SPAM folder. But what is the main cause for your emails not being able to reach your targetted prospects or subscribers? There are many reasons why it is the case, but by far the most important reason is this: Is your autoresponder a self hosted script OR third party autoresponder service? As mentioned, you acquire your autoresponder function either by the script you hosted on your website or you may build your list and your autoresponder through a third party service provider. The mission of a third party autoresponder service providers is to deliver your emails. Why do I not recommend a self-hosted script which you can install onto your webhost?

The reason is one word: “SPAM”. Some of your subscribers will report you as SPAM, no matter how diligent and sincere you are with your email marketing campaigns. People just forget they sign up on your list. They will report your emails as SPAMs some day down the road. It’s just a matter of “when”, not “If”. When subscribers report your emails as spams, their internet service provider (ISP) may blacklist your future emails. This blocks your emails getting into their inbox in the future. I have previously used a hosted service, which had good results initially (for about 6 months). After a few of my ex-subscribers complaint me spamming them, my emails are not as effective as before. Treat email autoresponders service companies eat and breath on deliverability.

They ensure your emails get delivered. Some autoresponder service us claiming that it delivers 99.34%, meaning it their readers get 99 emails out of 100 emails! There are some free autoresponder services out there. I urge you not to waste your time finding or even trying one. Why? I have used those services and only found myself promoting someone!|s else services. Those free services basically send out your emails with their own embedded advertising. Your readers will read their ads first before your messages. If you are not serious about your business, use free autoresponsers. Price should be the least concern, as autoresponder is your lifeblood of your viral traffic. Usually a quality autoresponder costs around $20 a month.

What is Tai Chi? A quick guide from Stratford Tai Chi

Posted: under Reviews.

The exact origins of Tai Chi are hard to tie down. There are many myths about its origins. One of those says that Taoist monk Chang San-feng was disturbed by the sounds of a snake and a crane fighting in his courtyard. He then built a style based around their movements.

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese form of movement that coordinates your body and focuses on the cultivation of internal energy. It’s aim is to harmonize the mind, body and spirit hence, promoting both metal and physical well being through relaxation. It is often described as a type of meditation that combines deep breathing and movements that exact structual alignment. Correct practice appears rhythmical, effortless and in continuous flow and it can generate surprising power almost at odds with its gentle movements.

People who regularly practice Tai Chi become revitalized, relaxed, tolerant, stronger and healthier. Tai Chi is suitable for all ages and sexes because it does not rely on strength, force or speeds. It brings benefits in many areas.

Tai chi is derived from Chinese health and longevity practices, which were merged with a comprehensive system of self defence. In the past, much of Tai Chi was kept secret, but very gradually, knowledge of the art spread throughout China. Now at the start and end of every day in villages, towns, and cities all over Chinese Asia, people can be seen practicing the slow, graceful movements of tai chi in courtyards, squares and parks.

Tai chi came to the West during the 20th century largely due to the cultural revolution when many masters fled the country. Today, tai chi is found in almost all countries, and a huge number of people practice it regularly.

It requires a high degree of concentration and mental focus. The breathing is natural, sometimes involving deep breathing, and is carefully synchronised to your movements.

Tai Chi consists of soft, relaxed (usually) slow movements and is recognised as being good for stress, balance, blood pressure and general health. It is one of the one of the Chinese Internal martial arts (neijia). The others being Hsing-I, Ba Gua Zhang and Liuhebafa(Six Harmonies, 8 Methods).

Tai Chi appeals to a wide range of people and age ranges, (teens and 20’s up to 80’s & 90’s) but it is not common for the art to be taught to children as the training can be slow for their tastes. There are a number of forms specifically targetted at the over 50’s and health problems such as Arthritis.

We, never mind our age bracket need some form of exercise to keep up a healther and healthier body. It’s a established fact that people that attempt to exercise regularly live longer and enjoymore productive lives and are fitter.

The seniors among us will most likely be capable to do, and respond better, to some type of exercise that places less strain on the body. This physical exercise in almost all cases will be low impact aerobic exercise.

When you meld a effective low impact exercise plan with a cholesterol lowering diet there is a very good probability that you’ll see a great improvement in a person’s over all wellness. The two things that genuinely have an impact on the over all health is the need in most instances to lower cholesterol and a need for cardiovascular exercise through a good aerobic workouts program.

Total physical fitness can be achieved through a low impact exercise program which deals with the whole body wherever possible. Even those with some types of limiting impairments can be involved in some type of low impact exercises.

To have a good low impact exercise program you should exercise (cardiovascularly) at least three days per week. A few recommend five days per week, but if you are not in shape and a little more senior you may want to stay with the three times per week schedule.

NO matter your physical condition, before you start or add to your excercise program, you really should talk with your doctor. This is of great importance if you’re a senior or someone with a disability.

Polyglow to Make your Boat Shine

Posted: under Reviews.

There are loads of boat wax products on the market. Of these products many are used to restore aged gelcoat. The issue is that they wash away and do not last very long. But only one product can add shine to your boat and last an entire year and that is Poliglow. What is different about Poliglow is that is only requires to be applied every 12 months and does not need to be reapplied. Poliglow is sold in a two part kit that contains Poly Prep, an applicator and the Poliglow product.

Fiberglass with age is like a sponge it keeps absorbing. Unlike wax where you remove from the boat, Poliglow adds to the boat. Poliglow will not wash off with soap, not even with compounds. It is also effortlessly easy to apply. Just wipe on. You do not have to rub or buff the boat.  PoliGlow is not a boat wax, but rather a boat polish. It is a protective clear coat that has been proven time and again to have a shine 5 times that of the best boat waxes on the market.

Each kit is ideal for a 30 foot boat that can be used for about 3-4 applications. Poliglow can be also be used on any fiberglass surfaces like RV’s, trailers and airplanes.

This is the best product out there for fiberglass restoration.  Poly Glow comes with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you are not satisfied with Polyglow just return it for a full refund.

History of Mistletoe

Posted: under Reviews.

History of Mistletoe

The mistletoe, native to the forests of Northern Europe, is a parasite implant on deciduous and evergreen trees which produces yellowish flowers and waxy white berries. Its closest relative in North America has yellowish flowers and waxy white berries, and is also commonly known as mistletoe. Notably, it is the official floral emblem of the State of Oklahoma.

The name mistletoe came about from two Anglo – Saxon words: mistel which means dung and tan which means twig. And so, mistletoe quite literally means dung on a twig. Mistletoe infers that life can spring up from dung. This leeching plant grows and thrives on the dung of birds on the branches of trees. As a result, mistletoe became the symbol of vivacity and fertility.

The Christmas and New Year tradition of embracing for the bashful and kissing for the brazen under a sprig of mistletoe dates back to olden Britain. Also, it was prevalent among the Druids who were the learned class of the Celts.

The Druids celebrated the beginning of winter ( winter solstice ) by collecting mistletoe and burning it as a sacrifice to their pagan gods. To ensure a year of good faith, peace, and familial harmony, they hung sprigs of mistletoe around their homes. Twigs of the evergreen displayed visibly outside their homes welcomed relatives, friends, neighbors and weary travelers and the mistletoe within encouraged them to embrace shamelessly. Feuding parties or foes who happened to meet under trees that contained mistletoe were required to lay aside their weapons and settle their differences.

The Druids believed that the mistletoe had healing properties. It was often prescribed for female infertility and as an antidote for poisons of all kinds. The gathering of mistletoe was a ceremony by the highest priests using gold knives. Such a carefree rite of harvesting mistletoe is dramatically portrayed in Bellinis opera Norma.

The Celtic Druids were not the only people who ascribed so many marvelous attributes to the mistletoe, the Scandinavians, who called it mistilteinn; also believed that it was the plant of peace, the plant of hope and the plant of harmony. The Scandinavian lore claims that the mistletoe belonged to Frigga, the Scandinavian star of inclination, and the embracing and kissing custom is thought to have come from this notion.

Mistletoe was also used for a decorative green in the Roman Empire during their feasts of Natalis Solis Invicti and Saturnalia. Due to its ties to idolatrous festivities, the Church banned the use of mistletoe when Christmas on December 25 was officially recognized as the birth of Christ in the the fourth century.

As an alternative to the mistletoe, the holly was ironically proposed even thought it too had strong associations with atheist rituals. Nevertheless, the hollys white flowers were to signify the purity of Christ, the acerbic leaves were to symbolize the thorns in Christs crown and the red berries as drops of His blood. Thus, the Holly became a Nativity tradition, but, surprisingly enough, the churchs ban on mistletoe which was in effect throughout the Middle Ages still persists today.

The Connection between Weight Loss and Hormones

Posted: under Reviews.

Your thyroid hormones dictate much of your metabolism, any malfunction or disease afflicting this area may cause you to have problems in metabolism leading to a drastic problem with your weight – you may either gain weight, lose weight, or may find that losing weight is harder than usual.

Those that plan diets do not take into consideration how their thyroids and metabolism may affect their weight loss program. Most experts and even the media pitch in and recommend that the best way to lose weight is cut calories.

Those with a condition called hyperthyroidism suffer from an overactive thyroid leading to one having his or her metabolism skyrocket. If this is the case, then you will probably lose weight fast. This is a nice proposition for some who wish to lose weight. However, this is actually hazardous to the health.

Aside from the medical difficulties such a disease brings, one will also notice weight problems as a result. These people have trouble keeping on weight and may notice weakness or bulging of the eyes. This disease may need special treatment from doctors.

Hypothyroidism on the other hand works in the other direction – slowing metabolism until the body gains weight at an incredible rate. Like hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism causes a general weakness in the body. It too may need special treatment and may cause serious health problems if left unattended.

While cutting calories in itself can be very hard for most people – imagine, the people involved in life and death struggles at the supermarket regarding whether to buy that extra box of sweets, some have exactly the opposite problem. Instead of eating too much calories – which is a problem in itself, they eat too little calories instead.

Problem? What Problem
The problem with some is that they believe that since the experts say that they have to cut calories, cutting calories to an inordinate amount will reap greater results. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. While cutting calories helps diets, consuming too little calories pushed the body into a hoard mode, the body’s metabolism slow to adapt to the lesser amount of available energy.

If your body enters this mode, your body will work at such slow metabolism that losing weight becomes impossible. The technique here should be to reduce calories without the body slowing its metabolism. Only then can losing weight become easier.

Another problem that can arise from decreased metabolism is that when your metabolism slows due to a drastic reduction in metabolism (f.e. during menopause), and then you suddenly eat a good, hearty, calorie-filled meal, you are bound to gain more weight owing to the increased surplus of energy.

This is why an imbalanced meal is highly discouraged among those that seek to lose weight. The sudden loss and increase of calories will cause an imbalance in one’s energy consumption directly affecting fat deposit.
